Full History, Lore, and Stories[]

The First Lore[]

Part 1: The Migration[]

The first Maneries originated through a common village in Barduria in 3 Half-sets BL, just before the expansion of the Bardur tribe, that would take place 2 Half-sets AL, The Maneries tribe made a mass exodus to the south. Tired by the bitter cold night, anguished by the constant pangs of hunger, and worried from the frequent raids by the local bærion, a large bear like creature, that was stronger than ten polys and stealthier than a Timber Wolz, and dismayed by the news of their ever aggressive neighbors, Bardur. The decision to leave was easy.

On the trip southward, they were still cold and starving but now happily strangers to the bærion and the Bardur alike. Things were looking up, with nothing but plains to make their travel easy. “What’s that, there is a giant mountain range in our path, ****! ”. In 1 Half-set BL, The tribe had just arrived at the northern rim of the Apicalese mountains. Many of the Maneriesse became disheartened resulting in a schism that would divide the tribe. As half rebelled against the leadership, opting to return north and become vassals to Bardur. And the remainder wishing to go around the mountain range, hoping to find better. So half north and half went southish, Those going southish. trudged their way around the range until they came upon a desert, stretching far to the west. A desert that was blessed by their first glimpse of the sun. Their second turn After Light they discovered a fertile valley, reaching to the south as far as they could see, and to the west as far as the mountains. The tribe would call this place, between the desert and the valley, their home.

For a Set of turns they were settled and began to thrive. They grew their cities, and learned many arts, even the forgotten craft of engineering, but all was not perfect here either. To replace the Bærion came Oumaji Riders from the desert, Riders who hit their warriors and stole their cities. To replace the Bardur was the Imperius legions of shield which no club could break. Beaten back and cut down the Maneries barely survived, left with nothing but ruins and memories. Completely ruined themselves, not daring to look back they carried on.

They would leave once more, but now with a determination never to do so again. They followed a fork in the fertile valley which headed north. Replacing the oaks with pines and adding horns to the hooved animals. They would go on to discover they were in a grassy plain encircled by mountains, sentinels to guard their new safe haven which they named Apicalo. This was just the place to build immense cities and impenetrable strongholds. It proved not only isolation but abundance. They discovered the pleasant afternoon sun, and in the mountains to the east the peaceful Ai-Mo. They would learn the practices of reading, writing, and philosophy from the Ai-Mo mind benders. Allowing them to record their knowledges of architecture and roads. And there they dwelt for half an age, flourishing, learning, and…. remembering.

Part 2: The Empires[]

After 18 half-sets, On the fifteenth turn of Set 9, A.C, out from the fortified pass of Vicauge, the rhythmic sounds of dozens of jogging warriors could be heard as they emerged out from the mountains. Upon reaching the end of the pass they split up into pairs heading out in all directions. The Maneries had just discovered Navigation. As they went they converted villages and developed vast road systems. The villages grew into keeps, eventually maturing into castles protected by massive guard towers to defend their newly settled land. During the nine generations of dormancy many new tribes had awakened and developed. Following a river that flowed from the mountains running southeast, leading to a the sea of whales and marauders. On either bank, stretching up and down the shores dwell the Polaris. And across the waves the lands of the Kickoo. the Maneries cousin Bardur had become a powerhouse to the north spreading across all the northern bardur woods. And the Xin-xi joined those who knew the pleasure and peace of the mountains off in the far east beyond the Ai-Mo. They also heard stories of distant bird tribes and mushroom eaters one of whom they recognized and frowned upon as the Vengir. Disgusted by the stories they heard of them, that came from even ancient eras. They also heard rumors of stirring in the ocean and tremors in the mountains.

To the south the Maneries found the plentiful Amasinn banks following the great disappearance of the Masin, the river beginning to the north, deep into the lands of the Fromix flowing southward and and eastward, reaching a point near the pass of Vicauge then heading westward to and along the edge of the Orion forests, before turning and south, finally curving east again halfway back and flowing south again to Alusia.

As they grew in size and strength now daring to leave their fully settled haven, converting villages and building cities. They built in the frost plains nestled right outside of the Apicalo mountains in the northwest, southeast across the wild lands all the way to the Polaris, And were the first to resettle along the Amasinn banks. Shortly after the founding of a new city in the southwest they rediscovered the underdeveloped yet vast desert of the Oumaji. Vengeance had been instilled throughout every Maneries generation and it was not long before the Oumajian and the Maneriesse met on the battlefield, eventually erupting into a war. Small melees were fought between the old rivals along their increasingly growing border. The combat was brutal and often to the last. The warriors of Maneri were slowly driven back as the Oumaji continued to quickly reinforce their front lines, this was due to their advanced mobility and communications allowed by the deserts and riders, but despite their victories they were unable to penetrate deep into Maneri fortified territory. From Apicalo the Maneri mobilized four battalions of knights and armored riders who meet thirty regiments of Oumaji light cavalry and two battalions of Zebasi mercenaries at the battle of Ghghgh. After massacring the Oumaji equestrian they razed the nearby cities, with only scattered defense to slow their advance that led to a short brutal campaign all the way until the sacking of the Oumaji capital of Lim. During the battle of Lim both of the Oumaji princes were slain and the tribe sued for peace.

Part 3: The Rivalry[]

The Imperius King watched this play out in horror, worried that the same fate could come to him. He sent an emissary to incite the Fromix to war against the Maneries. The Fromix had always eyed influence over the whole of the Amasinn river and hoped to join their extensive trade network with that of Alusia’s, whose together would surpass even the Luxidoor far to the east.

The Imperius ambassador convinced them to attack the Maneries from the north. And the Fromix moved eight battalions of warriors and cow riders across the Maneri Northwestern border into the frost plains. A turn later Imperius also persuaded the war loving southern clans of Bardur to join in. The Bardur mobilized twelve battalions of warriors and archers. And six battalions of riders who drew pine Mangonels. The local Maneries militia numbered six battalions of warriors. With no castle to run to, the Maneries would again remember after 10 generations the claw and tooth of the Bærion as all territory to the northwest beyond the Apicalo mountains fell under Bardurian control.

The Bardur continued their advance and began to climb the mountains of Apicalo assaulting the great Maneri fortress of Parsta. The Bardur armies were trained in dense snowy forests, And when fighting in the wooded tundra their warriors truly had no peer. Likewise the great Bardur slings capable of hurling avalanches of stones farther than the Hoodrick longbows were in every respect the most feared catapults of the time. But when confronted with the mounains, facing mighty ramparts and hails of arrows from unreachable archers, their warriors fought for not, and against thick citadel walls and Maneri trebuchets their once great slings would lay in heaps of splinters, All assaults on the mountains failed and the Bardur advance was stopped, In the northwest the the Maneries breathed a sigh of relief.

In the east, off the shores of the seas of whales and marauders, came navies of the Kickoo. The Maneries had made friends with the Polaris meeting them early on in their expansion, The Polaris would settle along to coasts and the Maneries would move toward the heartland. The Polaris utilized unique lanterns which would attract fish allowing prosperous ports and harbors, The growing success of the vast Polaris fishing array became more and more of a threat to Kickoo’s naval supremacy. Which up until the “Blue Truce” had been preoccupied by the Poa. Now, the Kickoo turned their eyes on the Polaris.

Six fleets, each with a Battleship serving as its flagship, sailed across the sea from the Kickoo archipelago, The Polaris navy of bulky ketches and sloops were separated from each other and sunk by superior mobility and firepower of the Kickoo brigs. With defeat after defeat, as their outposts were smashed and villages burned, Polaris could do nothing, and no help would come from Maneri, Now it was Polaris’s turn to find a new home, but unlike the Maneries they headed north into the frozen desolate wasteland, there they would be forgotten. With the Polaris buffer gone marauders such as Hugave & Auser would now be free to raid the Maneries near the coast.

The Kings of Imperius and Zebasi came together to make an alliance, The Imperius were to rule the North and the East as far as the ends of the square, as the Zebasi ruled the South and the West to the skies edge, but first they would divide the Amasinn river halfway at the Orion. The Imperius fielded fifty Legions and the Zebasi a hundred, The Imperius were renown for their fighting capabilities in hand to hand combat, the strength of their Mado horses, and their ruthlessness both on and off the battle field. The Zebasi Geroffy stood neck and shoulders above any other terrestrial mount, These animals either ridden by skilled riders or pulling powerful war carts, Their fighters brandished shields made by the greatest carpenters of the square, embroidered with frightening depictions of any war beast ever charted. The Maneri cities in the south had small walls and exposed desert towers. These were defended by a comparably small 12 battalions of swordsmen and archers, far from supply centers, and greatly discouraged by the prospect of fighting for a foreign land, and dying in an unloved grave.

The assault began and the desert cities fell easily as the defenders were either surrounded and besieged, scared off, or slaughtered. And the Unnumbered advance of the united Imperius and Zebasi empires reached the Amasinn. The cities along the Amasinn were guarded by 20 battalions plus 4 reorganized from the Oumaji desert. In Apicalo the Emperor and the council of Arch Elders were planning a counter strike but they first needed to buy time and stall the advance.

The Ai-Mo riddle[]

In the Maneri half-set Apicalo 4

One of the first mind-benders of the Maneries named Versterung traveled to a nearby Ai-Mo city. He had come to buy a bird eye chili pepper which was unique to the Ai-M geography. While he was in a market place after the purchase of the hot ingredient. He saw a group of warriors chatting around a fire and looking out into the eternal evening light. Laughing to himself he approached them. And they invited him to join them around the fire. Thinking it would be fun, Versterung began to show off. He told them of the many grandeur' of the square that he had learned after turns of study and began performing magic tricks and slight of hand.

While this was going on, a mind bender from Ai-Mo was also buying a bird eye chili pepper. The excitement around the fire drew his attention and he wandered over their to check it out. His national pride was hurt when the very warriors of his tribe were so easily impressed by the sophisticated nothing of a Maneri mind bender. using little more than cheap tricks. Initially he kept a distance, observing and listening to the foolishness of the Maneries as it awed the Warriors. So to redeem their tribes glorious name he confronted the Maneriesse.

He approached and asked Versterung “Do you have all knowledge of the books of the Maneries” “Yes” Versterung replied confident he could beat anything the Ai-Mo had to through at him “Then you could bend all minds” “A archer though he shoot, a rider though he ride, a puller (catapult) though he sling a scout though he hide”(he intentionally left out warrior thinking it best) "Then answer this riddle 'a giant in his might, a dragon in his thunder, a knight in his steel, a Navalon in his wonder. Even a bender in his wisdom and a crab with his shell cannot withstand the former spell. But what is pink? and has fur? can make the ground rumble? can make a sword run? and can make you humble??' ”

Versterung didn't say even though he knew the answer. For fear the soldiers would laugh, that he could convert the likes of a dragon but he could not understand the mind of a bunny.

The half-set Apicalo 31

I climbed up to the peak of mount Vicauge and looked over the scene in which we had lain waste the Imperial army of the cursed Imperius. it was nice to get away with myself to meditate, few still know the arts these turns but I was fortunate enough to be descended from a mind bender of old. I imagined what it must have been like during the height of Apicalo and the empire of Maneri and could almost make out our banner standing proud atop mighty parapets. but now something big was brewing for the Imperius empire had fallen long ago and since then many tribes disappeared who knows where to. Only four remain to be found, the Xin-xi, the remnants of the cursed Imperius, the Bardur, and the cursed Oumaji. A famine struck a generation ago and lasted until very recently, now many ruins lie about. All old culture collapsed into city states and only our capitals remain within out cultural heritages. It has been a while but their are a precious few like me, My city could have funded a workshop but they need an explorer so I guess I must go.

I ran out into the polytopian world, I headed south and meet Oumaji they seemed a bit hostile and greeted me suspiciously, they have developed a form Riding already. I also recognizing the fertile valley, saw the cursed Imperius, and they laughed at the thought of the "Puny" Maneries. I was no longer welcome but I was impressed by their Organization. Next I headed North and met the Bardur, they saluted me friendly but paid no attention to what they called our tiny realm, they did however invite me hunting which I respectfully declined but I was eventually pressured into doing so and we went to a forest at the bottom of a mountain. Struck by it's sheer height and beauty, I began to paint it and while I was doing so, A Xin-xi warrior approached, and seeing my painting and the strength of the bardurian hunters, bowed in awe of our mighty civilizations. I noticed he had climbed over the mountain so inquired about it and he shared with me the secret of Climbing.

I returned to the capital with all of this Information of the four super tribes, other explorers had gone out and they discovered Kickoo with fishing and so a massive series of wars for our world began, a short time after this Hoodrick and Luxidoor, then with a series of intervals Vengir, Zebasi, we thought we saw Polaris but the reports propved it false. The Ai-Mo, the Ancient Aquarion are back, then Quetzali, and the mysterious Elyrion and so began a struggle in what would be known as "The Battle", the Battle of Polytopia...

“Castles” start with the same stats as a City but with a altered Upgrade path.

Stage 1

  • Workshop” is replaced with “Barracks” which allows the Castle to Support 1 more unit, this does not have to be filled to level the castle up. To distinguish it, it is a small circle on the right side of the population bar
  • ”Explorer” is replaced with a “Expeditionist” which moves half the spaces but can move on all terrains

Stage 2

  • ”City Walls” is kept the same
  • ”Resources” is replaced with “Swordsman” this spawns a swordsman.

Stage 3

  • ”Population Growth” is replaced with “Mote” which increases the cost of opponents moving into the city by 0.5, it makes the city a terminal tile for all unfriendly land and skate, and is counted as water for all swim, navigate, and carry units.

Stage 4+
